So what should it be considered? By the way, in case you didnt notice, I moved this topic INTO the rock forum since it IS about that forum and has nothing to do with metal since THOSE bands are NOT considered metal.

I look up some stuff in the dictionary for everybody:

Rock Music - Popular music of the late 20th century, especially among the younger population. Rock music originated in the 1950's in America, but swiftly became popular in Europe and throughout the world. In the late sixties and seventies, many British rock composers and performers became popular in the United States as well as in Europe. This style of music is characterized by a driving backbeat, electric guitar, and vocals. Rock music has been associated in the past with youth rebellion and protesting, but has developed into a more accepted form of entertainment among most age groups.

Rock Band - A musical ensemble specializing in rock music. Usually consisting of amplified and electric guitars, a rhythm section (drums, piano or keyboard instrument, and bass).

Ta daaaa! i hope that helps some people out there realise what IS and what IS NOT rock, from a university student of music point of view.

does it really matter... i mean, ive heard rockbands play classical music, pop bands play house, jazz bands play the blues, lol... i kno categorizin things can be handy sometimes, but it can be just as useless as well... with my old band we used to play all sorts of styles, and the bookies could never figure out wut to put on the poster/flyer... we've been catergorized as rock, metal, psychedelic and even pop... listen for yourself, if ya wanna, and tell me, which is it naughty.gif

I think there should be a pop rock thread if some people are having a problem with it.

If the website got mixed up in all the different names and styles people label on bands today there would be so many sub-genres that we'd get lost in them all and confused on where to go to post, its easier to have a generalized name like rock and let people make what they will out of it, i mean you can decide what bands to discuss and which not, but it would be impossible to try and put bands in areas that everyones going to agreee with because theres so many ways people view and label music. So I think its fine like it is.

I have to agree a little bit with irbsk8ing that this rock forum does have alot of stuff about those sort of popish rock bands like compared to other sites like bandlink but its not really a bad thing i mean ya like what ya like its no big deal.
Rock is a fairly broad genre its hard to say that somethings this and it isnt this and theres no point trying to.
